At the recently held Progressives Digital Media Summit in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a compelling message to digital influencers, content creators, and media stakeholders across the nation. In his keynote address, Tinubu called for heightened responsibility in the dissemination of information online, urging all Nigerians — particularly digital media personalities — to “Verify Before You Amplify.”

The summit, themed "Reshaping Media Narratives in the Age of Digital Democracy," attracted hundreds of media experts, social media influencers, and communication strategists from across the country. It was convened to address growing concerns over fake news, deepening misinformation, and the increasingly polarized nature of public discourse on Nigeria’s digital platforms.

Tinubu's Message: Truth Before Trend

President Tinubu, speaking passionately from the podium, emphasized the power wielded by digital creators and how such power must be anchored in truth and national responsibility.
“In this age of information warfare, you — the influencers, the content creators, the media voices — are our frontline defenders. But you must wield your platforms with integrity. Verify what you promote. The damage from misinformation is far-reaching, often irreversible,” Tinubu said.

The president’s statement comes amid increasing cases of misinformation leading to panic, reputational damage, and, in some cases, violence. Tinubu highlighted several instances where unverified posts had misled millions, disrupted public order, or fueled distrust in government institutions.

Pledge to Tackle Digital Exclusion

The president also addressed the digital divide in Nigeria, stating that less than one percent of the 35 million persons living with disabilities currently have access to the internet or digital tools. He declared that his administration is committed to expanding digital inclusion across all demographics, particularly vulnerable and marginalized groups.

> “We cannot afford to have two Nigerias — one connected, one excluded. Every Nigerian deserves to be part of the digital future, regardless of geography, ability, or status,” he said.

 Tinubu revealed plans for a new National Digital Empowerment Fund (NDEF) that will target youth in rural areas, persons with disabilities, and underserved communities. This fund, according to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, will be disbursed to train 1 million Nigerians in ethical digital practices and responsible content creation by 2026.
