Activist and presidential candidate of the action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has confirmed his release from police detention following his recent arrest during a protest in Abuja.
Sowore, who was apprehended alongside several other protesters demanding good governance, took to social media to announce his freedom and express gratitude to supporters who stood by him.
“I’ve just been released from the unlawful detention by the Nigerian Police. Thank you all for the solidarity and concern,” Sowore wrote.
The arrest, which sparked outrage across civil society and human rights groups, was described by many as an attempt to silence dissent and intimidate peaceful protesters.
Sowore had joined demonstrators calling for reforms, an end to hardship, and justice for victims of bad governance. Videos from the protest showed him being bundled into a police van before being taken to an undisclosed location.
His legal team had demanded his immediate and unconditional release, arguing that the arrest was unconstitutional and an abuse of power.
Reacting to his release, Sowore reaffirmed his commitment to fighting for Nigerians' rights and holding the government accountable. “This fight is not about me, it’s about all of us. We must not be silent,” he stated.
He also hinted at plans to take legal action against the authorities for what he called “harassment and illegal detention.”
Supporters and rights groups have called on the Nigerian government to respect the rule of law and allow space for peaceful protest and opposition voices.
