US Embassy Confirms Continuation of Visa and Passport Services in Nigeria Amid Government Shutdown


Despite the ongoing partial shutdown of the United States government, the US Embassy in Nigeria has assured citizens and visa applicants that its operations in Nigeria, including visa and passport services, will continue uninterrupted.


In a public statement released through official channels, the Embassy clarified that consular services remain fully operational, and Nigerians who have scheduled appointments for visa interviews or passport processing should proceed as planned.


This reassurance comes amid growing concerns from Nigerians over the impact of the US government shutdown on services abroad. The shutdown, triggered by budget disagreements in the US Congress, has affected various government departments and led to service disruptions in some countries.


However, the US Mission in Nigeria emphasized that its consular operations are considered essential and are funded through separate fee-based revenue streams, which are not affected by the budget impasse.

Many Nigerians who are in the process of studying, working, or traveling to the US have welcomed the news with relief. Several applicants expressed concern earlier in the week, fearing their plans might be disrupted.


“We are aware of the uncertainty this situation might cause, but we want to assure Nigerians that visa interviews, passport renewals, and other related services remain unaffected,” said a spokesperson from the US Embassy in Abuja.


The announcement also encouraged visa applicants to continue monitoring the US Embassy’s official website and social media platforms for any updates or changes in scheduling.
